20yo deliveryman dies saving drowning father and son, unfulfills dream to buy car for dad

A 20-year-old food delivery rider in southwestern China lost his life after rescuing a father and son who had fallen into a river.

According to local media reports cited by the Yangcheng Evening News, Jin Xiaowu, a food delivery rider, was swept away by a strong undercurrent immediately following his heroic act on the afternoon of May 27 in Tongxing Village, Guizhou Province.

The Guizhou Foundation for Justice and Courage confirmed the details of the incident in a statement issued on June 14.

The incident unfolded when a young boy reportedly fell into the river while playing near the bank. His father quickly jumped in to save him but was overpowered by the water.

Jin, along with three other bystanders, rushed into the water to help. Working together, the group managed to pull both the father and son safely back to the shore.

However, Jin was then caught in the undertow and carried away by the rushing water. Emergency rescue teams immediately launched a search operation, and his body was recovered several hours later.

A son's unfulfilled dream

Family members shared that Jin had taken on work at a young age to help support his parents. Severe financial difficulties and his father's prolonged illness had placed a heavy burden on the family, prompting him to take on long hours. As a delivery rider, he frequently worked late into the night to earn a living.

Notes discovered on his mobile phone revealed his two primary goals for the year 2026: saving 20,000 yuan (US$2,950) and buying a car for his father, according to news outlet 8world.

He had recently used a portion of his savings to buy a new smartphone for his mother.

His father described him as a kind-hearted young man who, even as a young child, never hesitated to step in and help others in danger.

Local authorities have nominated Jin and the other three bystanders for official bravery awards. Officials stated they will provide further public recognition and financial assistance to the grieving family to honor his sacrifice.
