Julito Velasco, vice chairperson of the Nuclear-Free Bataan Movement, said the ordinance aims to prevent the storage of nuclear-related materials within Morong’s jurisdiction.
According to Velasco, the ordinance was enacted in response to growing concerns over nuclear safety and the potential environmental and public health risks associated with nuclear energy and radioactive waste.
He added that Morong’s move is in line with broader regional and national initiatives promoting nuclear-free communities.
Velasco also said provincial officials and various sectors in Bataan have remained critical of proposals to revive the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, arguing that the facility no longer serves the interests of local communities more than four decades after it was abandoned./coa
