The Hospital at Maayo celebrated a decade of service this week, and the milestone arrived with a distinction that few institutions in the country can claim. The Philippine Hospital Association has named the facility the Best Level 2 Private Hospital in the Philippines, a single national honor awarded in its category.
Ten years later, we’re still here. We’re providing better service than we have at the outset.

The recognition stood at the heart of the anniversary celebration, where staff, partners, and community members gathered to reflect on how far the hospital has come.
From care center to trusted hospital
Maayo began modestly as an ambulatory care center built to serve the medical tourism market. What started as a focused operation grew into something far larger, driven by the needs of the Cebuano community it set out to serve.
That growth was tested early. The hospital opened its doors in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, a moment when most organizations were pulling back rather than expanding. The decision reflected a willingness to meet the community where it stood, even under the hardest conditions.
“Ten years later, we’re still here. We’re providing better service than we have at the outset,” said Dr. Lawrence Chad Liu, Chief Operating Officer and Medical Director, in an interview.
A national honor that inspires
For Dr. Liu, the national recognition is both a reward and a responsibility. “The Philippine Hospital Association awarded us the best hospital for a Level 2 hospital in the private sector, for the entire Philippines. And so that helps inspire us to continue to do what we’re doing and also to help us improve what we’re currently doing,” he shared.
He pointed to the award as the hospital’s proudest achievement to date, noting that only one hospital in the country received the honor in its category.
The celebration also turned its attention to the people who made the milestone possible. The hospital recognized employees who have served for a full 10 years, marking their loyalty and contributions since the earliest days of the institution.
Their long-standing commitment mirrors the hospital’s own steady climb, a reminder that institutions are built by the people who stay through every challenge.
Looking toward the next ten years
As Maayo sets its sights on the future, Dr. Liu sees collaboration and technology as the path forward.
“The Hospital at Maayo isn’t a facility that stands only by itself, but works with other sectors, other areas of specialty,” he explained.
He expressed excitement about connecting with newer technologies to deliver better healthcare and medical services, and about building partnerships that extend the hospital’s reach well beyond its own walls.
