Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Home Affairs Minister inspected the implementation of the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) program in Jayapura City, Papua, as part of the launch of home renovation projects covering 22,379 houses across the province.
"Today, we came to this location, which serves as a symbol of the launch of home renovation projects for 22,379 houses across the Papua region, including 4,500 houses in Papua Province," Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian said in a statement on Monday.
He said the visit in Mosso Village, Muara Tami District, Jayapura City, Papua, was aimed at ensuring that the housing assistance program initiated by President Prabowo Subianto is implemented properly, particularly in Eastern Indonesia.
According to Tito, the program reflects President Prabowo's concern for low-income communities.
He also called on regional leaders to fully support the program so that its benefits can reach more people.
During the visit, Tito, accompanied by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti and other officials, held direct talks with two beneficiaries, who have long lived in Mosso Village.
After inspecting their houses, the minister assessed that both were eligible for BSPS assistance. The buildings were severely damaged, with deteriorated walls, weak foundations, and leaking roofs.
According to him, the high number of uninhabitable houses in Papua underscores the importance of broad support for the program.
"In Papua, one in three people lives in an uninhabitable house, around 30 percent. This cannot be resolved through regional budgets alone because those budgets are already focused on education, health, roads, and personnel spending," he explained.
Tito added that the involvement of the central government through the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) represents a strategic step to accelerate efforts to address uninhabitable housing in the region.
"This is a major breakthrough that has never happened before. Therefore, I urge regional leaders to provide full support," he said.
Papua Governor Mathius D. Fakhiri, Jayapura Mayor Abisai Rollo, and other officials also attended the event.
