Traffic Police Begin Testing Robot Technology for Public Awareness Campaigns in Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu. The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office has launched a feasibility study and pilot testing of robotic technology aimed at enhancing traffic awareness and promoting the use of emerging technologies in public education. The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with Unitree Nepal (MAW Future Tech).

Public interest in the project has grown in recent days after videos featuring traffic police personnel and robots circulated widely on social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok.

Speaking on the development, Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office spokesperson and Superintendent of Police (SP) Naresh Raj Subedi said the project is currently in its preliminary study and demonstration phase.

“While we are introducing the concept of ‘faceless traffic,’ we have begun exploring how technology can be used to raise public awareness and support awareness classes through robots,” Subedi said. “No final decision has been made yet regarding how this technology will be implemented in the future.”

According to the office, the initial plan is to deploy robots at bus parks to provide long-distance travelers with safety information and assist in delivering awareness messages to drivers and passengers.

Traffic police have already provided awareness-related materials, based on which the robot is currently being trained. If the pilot proves successful, the initiative will be expanded further in coordination with local authorities, Subedi added.

Suman Khadka, a representative of MAW Vriddhi Future Tech (Unitree Nepal), said Unitree Nepal operates under MAW Future Tech and serves as the official distributor of Unitree robots in Nepal.

“We are working with the traffic police to digitally train the robot using awareness materials,” Khadka said. “The technology could potentially be used for awareness campaigns on issues such as road safety, zebra crossing rules, and substance abuse prevention.”

However, Khadka noted that Nepal’s current road infrastructure is not yet suitable for deploying robots in active traffic management roles. As a result, the technology is currently being considered primarily for targeted public awareness campaigns.
