A big row broke out in the Lower

House on Tuesday during debate on the government's plan for new

housing, with the centre-left opposition accusing members of

general-turned-politician Roberto Vannacci's new far-right

National Future (FN) party of using language reminiscent of the

Fascist racial laws.

Federico Fornaro said FN's Rossano Sasso had "crossed a line",

accusing him of suggesting that "mere fact of having a foreign

name and belonging to a certain religion is enough to be

stigmatized.

"This brings to mind 1938 and the racial laws," Fornaro said.

Sasso hit back by defending FN's drive for "housing for Italians

first" and accusing the opposition of being "racist toward

Italians".
