Strikes in Italy were down 5.5% last
year, the national strikes watchdog said Tuesday.
While all types of strikes were down in 2025, general strikes
are bucking the trend, especially at the initiative of smaller
and grassroots unions.
"2025 consolidates the downward trend in strike activity: with
1,020 strikes (from 1,129 in 2023 to 1,080 in 2024), there is a
5.5% decrease compared to 2024 and a 9.6% contraction over the
three-year period," said the Annual Report of the Guarantor
Commission on strikes in essential public services, presented by
President Paola Bellocchi to the Chamber of Deputies.
However, it is emphasized that the general strike trend is
striking, with calls for a general strike doubling from 17 in
2024 to 33 in 2025.
This increase, almost entirely attributable to the initiative of
smaller groups and grassroots unions, resulted in 27
mobilizations actually held, concentrated in 9 days.
