The Rotary Club of Makati (RCM) successfully mounted an extraordinary collaborative exhibition that brought together the worlds of contemporary geometric abstraction and fine jewelry design. Featuring the works of RCM Rotarian and acclaimed geometric abstract artist Aaron Virata Mempin alongside respected jeweler and philanthropist Mitzi De Castro Parungao, the exhibition was held at the distinguished Salcedo Auctions, the Philippines’ premier auction house. More than a showcase of artistic excellence, the event highlighted the transformative possibilities that emerge when two creative disciplines engage in meaningful dialogue.
At the heart of the exhibition was a shared commitment to innovation, craftsmanship, and service. Mempin, celebrated for his distinctive visual language rooted in “organized chaos” and the philosophy of “shared authorship,” joined forces with Parungao, whose more than three decades of experience in jewelry design have established her as both a master artisan and a dedicated humanitarian. Together, they presented a body of work in which abstract visual narratives extended beyond the canvas and found expression in precious metals and gemstones, transforming artistic concepts into tangible, wearable forms.
The exhibition successfully bridged conceptual artistry and accessibility, allowing audiences to appreciate both the intellectual depth of abstract art and the personal resonance of wearable design. Mempin’s exploration of structure, symbolism, and introspection found an intriguing counterpart in Parungao’s ability to translate artistic concepts into elegant, contemporary forms. The resulting presentation offered visitors multiple ways to engage—with their eyes, their emotions, and their imagination.
How art turned into adornment
For Virata Mempin, the collaboration represented an opportunity to expand the vocabulary of his artistic practice. The experience challenged him to reconsider how geometric abstraction could function beyond the boundaries of a two-dimensional surface. “My visual language adjusted from purely structural geometry on canvas to a more fluid dialogue with jewelry. I was drawn to Mitzi’s ability to translate complex emotions into wearable art, which mirrors my own pursuit of finding order within my pieces.”
He described the collaboration through the concept of Refined Intersections—a meeting place where precise geometry encounters the organic sophistication of jewelry design. Parungao recalls a similar sense of discovery. The vitality and movement present in Virata Mempin’s paintings immediately captured her imagination, inspiring her to reinterpret that same energy through jewelry. “I was most surprised by how naturally our two distinct mediums merged into a singular, cohesive narrative. Moving forward, my practice will likely embrace more cross-disciplinary influences to keep the creative process fresh and expansive.”
For Parungao, jewelry has always served a purpose beyond ornamentation. Her work seeks to preserve stories, commemorate meaningful moments, and celebrate the enduring traditions of fine craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from both natural forms and architectural structure, she approached the collaboration as an opportunity to explore connection itself. “My inspiration is drawn from the intersection of nature’s organic beauty and the structured elegance of modern architecture. In this exhibit, I was telling stories of connection and the invisible threads that bind different artistic disciplines together. Working with Aaron challenged me to think more abstractly about composition and how a piece of jewelry can function as a sculpture in motion.”
Rather than altering her creative identity, the partnership broadened the context in which her ideas could exist. She noted that some of the strongest moments in the collection emerged where Mempin’s angular visual language met the fluid curves characteristic of her jewelry designs. “The conversation is strongest in the pieces where the angularity of his lines perfectly cradles the curves of my jewelry designs.” Mempin echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the organic nature of their creative exchange. “Our exchange was a fluid flow of ideas,” he said.
Their collaboration arrived during a period when audiences increasingly value authenticity and meaningful storytelling. Technical excellence remains important, but people are often drawn to work that reflects sincerity, curiosity, and emotional depth. The partnership between Virata Mempin and Parungao embodied these qualities. Built upon mutual respect and a genuine interest in each other’s practice, the project demonstrated how different creative perspectives can enrich one another without sacrificing individuality.
Community service is creativity beyond the canvas
The collaboration reflected Rotary’s enduring belief that collective efforts create greater impact than individual pursuits alone. According to Rotary Club of Makati President Eduardo H. Galvez, the exhibition embodied the organization’s core values and its commitment to meaningful collaboration.
“In Rotary, we speak of Synergy as the force that amplifies our individual efforts toward lasting change,” Galvez underscored during the event. “This collaboration mirrors our club’s Seven Areas of Focus, demonstrating how disparate talents can converge into a unified narrative of progress. We are deeply grateful to Richie Lerma and the team at Salcedo Auctions for providing the perfect stage for this intersection of artistry and advocacy.” Galvez further emphasized how the partnership served as a metaphor for Rotary’s mission of bringing people together to create positive change.
“This exhibition, the culmination of a unique creative partnership between our RCM brother Aaron Virata Mempin and Mitzi De Castro Parungao, serves that higher purpose. In Rotary, we often speak of ‘Synergy’ as the force that amplifies our individual efforts. By merging Aaron’s geometric abstractions, inspired by the rhythmic continuity of our coastlines, with Mitzi’s soul-stirring jewelry, this showcase becomes a metaphor for our own work. It demonstrates how disparate elements, like our various service projects, can converge into a unified narrative of hope and progress,” RCM President Galvez continued.
The Rotary Club of Makati likewise extended its sincere appreciation to Richie Lerma and Salcedo Auctions for championing Filipino creativity and supporting initiatives that unite cultural enrichment with community service.
The art of shared creation
For Virata Mempin, whose artistic practice frequently embraces collaboration as an essential creative principle, the exhibition represented a natural evolution of his work. The project challenged him to explore how geometric abstraction could exist beyond the two-dimensional space of painting while maintaining the integrity of his visual identity. “My visual language has become more tactile through this process, shifting from structural geometry to a fluid dialogue,” VirataMempin explains. “I maintain my identity by ensuring my signature geometric framework remains the anchor, while allowing Mitzi’s voice to flourish within it to create a more complete, shared truth.”
His approach reflected a belief that collaboration is not about compromise but about creating space where multiple perspectives can coexist and enrich one another. Through this partnership, his familiar geometric structures evolved into forms that invited physical interaction, movement, and intimacy.
Jewelry as sculpture and storytelling
Parungao approached the collaboration with equal enthusiasm, viewing it as an opportunity to expand the conceptual possibilities of jewelry. Long recognized for creating elegant bespoke pieces that honor both tradition and individuality, she drew inspiration from Virata Mempin’s abstract compositions and their dynamic interplay of form and rhythm. “Working with Aaron challenged me to think of jewelry as ‘sculpture in motion,” Parungao noted.
“I hope the message that resonates is that different forms of beauty can coexist and enhance one another. I strive to be remembered not only for the brilliance of the stones I set, but for the lives I touch through the spirit of giving back.” Her contribution demonstrated how jewelry can function simultaneously as adornment, artistic expression, and storytelling. By translating geometric ideas into wearable objects, she created pieces that celebrated movement, connection, and shared creativity.
Among the exhibition’s highlights is a limited series of three collaborative earrings that embody the concept of Shared Authorship. Conceived by Parungao and informed by Mempin’s geometric aesthetic, the pieces feature carefully selected gemstones and Akoya pearls set within silver structures finished in yellow gold. These works translate the artist’s visual language into wearable form, transforming geometric abstraction into jewelry that interacts with movement and light.
The contrast between sharp architectural lines and the soft organic qualities of pearls creates a dynamic visual tension. Through these pieces, Mempin’s compositions evolve beyond the canvas, becoming sculptural objects activated by the wearer. What was once purely visual acquires a physical presence, inviting a new kind of engagement.
Galvez noted that the exhibition’s significance extended well beyond aesthetics, serving as a reminder of the powerful relationship between professional expertise and civic engagement. “Beyond the aesthetic brilliance on display, this collaboration bridges the gap between the world of art and the world of advocacy. It invites us to see our civic responsibilities through a lens of ‘shared authorship,’ reminding us that when we connect our professional expertise with our passion for giving back, we create something far more resilient than we could alone,” he concluded.
