
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Ten passengers, including the captain, were rescued after the motorbanca they were riding capsized near Sulpa Island off Olango Island.
At around 5:50 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026, the vessel encountered large waves brought about by inclement weather, causing its engine to stall.
Upon receiving the report, the Coast Guard Clearing Outpost Marigondon, together with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), CENRO-Coastal Resource Management, the Philippine Red Cross, and the Marigondon Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (BDRRMO), immediately assessed the condition and well-being of the rescued passengers.

Rescue teams promptly responded and towed the capsized motorbanca from Sulpa Island to Marigondon Port, arriving at 8:06 p.m. the same day.
The passengers, all residents of Barangay Subabasbas, were identified as Pio Pogoy, 64; Jexter Tabasa, 30; Niño Tabasa, 26; Reymart Tabasa, 21; Peter Tabasa, 19; Rica Tampus, 16; Kevin Tabasa, 14; Urie John Tabasa, 15; and Cristobal Adaza, 20. Also on board was Jorge Udto, 54, of Pangan-an Island, the owner and captain of the motorized banca.
According to the report, the passengers were bound for Pangan-an Island to attend a wedding ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, June 23.
The Lapu-Lapu City Police Office also assisted in the rescue operation.

On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the Coast Guard Clearing Outpost Marigondon, together with CENRO-Coastal Resource Management and TagaDagat Search and Rescue, initiated monitoring activities due to rough sea conditions caused by inclement weather.
Authorities also advised motorbancas with less than 15 gross tonnage at Marigondon Port not to sail to prevent accidents. Meanwhile, vessels with 15 gross tonnage and above were advised to take precautionary measures and, if possible, avoid navigation under the prevailing sea conditions.
