A teenage girl testified in court today that she deliberately engaged with a Bolt driver accused of sexually assaulting her because she was experiencing severe psychological distress and wanted to be “kidnapped and killed”.
The testimony was heard during proceedings against 30-year-old Amir Hussein, who is pleading not guilty to charges of sexual assault as reported by Times of Malta.
The girl told the court that the incident began after an argument with a friend in Paola. She booked a Bolt ride home to Santa Luċija but said she was already struggling with thoughts of wanting to be abducted and harmed.
During the journey, she struck up a conversation with the driver and viewed the encounter as an opportunity to act on those thoughts.
The court heard that the driver complimented her and asked for her phone number, which she provided. After arriving home, the pair agreed to meet again later that evening.
The teenager changed her clothes and later met the driver again after he finished other trips.
She told the court that the driver suggested driving to Blue Grotto, an idea she accepted because she “wanted things to go badly”.
According to her testimony, the two parked near the cliffs, where the driver allegedly made sexual advances and asked her to kiss him.
The girl insisted that she never intended for the encounter to become sexual, maintaining that her mindset at the time was focused on being abducted or harmed.
She alleged that the driver grabbed her hand and forced her to touch his genitals despite her attempts to pull away.
The witness also claimed the accused pressured her into sexual acts by arguing that he had gone out of his way to pick her up.
On the drive back, she said she disclosed her emotional state to the driver and explained what she had originally hoped would happen.
The teenager testified that she immediately informed her mother upon arriving home. Together, they went to Paola Police Station to file a report.
During cross-examination, the court heard that she had previously attempted a similar scheme while on a trip to New York with her mother, resulting in police intervention.
She also admitted to using cannabis with friends and acknowledged that it made her more impulsive. The witness further confirmed that she had not taken her prescribed psychiatric medication on the day of the incident.
The defence argued that the teenager had intentionally set out to involve the accused in her plan to be kidnapped and killed.
She acknowledged that such thoughts were not new, telling the court: “This was not the first time I had this plan. I had been planning this for a long time.”
The court also heard that, following the alleged incident, she had wanted to go to the accused’s home. The witness said the driver ultimately told her he was unable to take her there.
Following the driver’s arraignment, Bolt said it takes allegations of misconduct “extremely seriously” and is cooperating fully with the police investigation.
The prosecution is being led by Police Inspector Antonello Magri and lawyer Kristina Bartolo from the Office of the Attorney General.
Lawyer Nicolai Bugeja is appearing for the alleged victim, while lawyer Nicholas Mifsud is representing the accused.
