Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs stated regulations on the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and innovation drafted by the government are intended to encourage more productive use of the technology.
Director General of Digital Ecosystem at the ministry, Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, during the launch of Digital Ecosystem Alignment (DEAL) 2026 here on Tuesday, said there is a gap between the level of AI usage among Indonesians and the productivity gains generated from the technology.
"People ask why the government is regulating AI. This is not about compliance, it is an enabler. It provides a pathway for AI to become more productive," Abdullah said.
He refered a study showed around 80 percent of Indonesians have used AI, but its contribution to improve the productivity has only reached around 13 percent.

Therefore, the government encouraged the national development on AI ecosystem through several priority measures to maximise the productivity impact of using the technology.
"The government says if those priorities are implemented, then AI productivity can grow even further," Abdullah said.
AI development also needs to be accompanied by good governance, so that the technology is not misused for creating deepfakes, digital fraud, or various other forms of cybercrime.
Previously, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid on Thursday (June 11) revealed the latest developments regarding the presidential regulation to govern AI innovation development in Indonesia.
She said her ministry has conducted public consultations with several companies in the US and making adjustments to the draft regulation.
Hafid stated the updated draft regulation is complete and has been submitted to the State Secretariat Ministry for expedited processing into a formal regulation, with a targeted release in 2026.
