In Eastbourne, British qualifier Giles Hussey stunned French Open semi-finalist Matteo Arnaldi to reach the second round.
The 293rd-ranked Hussey beat world number 30 Arnaldi 6-4 6-2 to set up a meeting with Frenchman Quentin Halys.
Arnaldi, 29, was playing his first tournament since being forced to withdraw before his last-four match at Roland Garros with illness.
Hussey won his first Challenger title in South Africa last month and secured straight-set wins over 78th-ranked James Duckworth and world number 94 Marco Trungelliti to qualify for just the second ATP Tour event of his career.
In the women's draw, Italy's top seed Jasmine Paolini was beaten 6-4 6-3 by Germany's Tatjana Maria, who won the Queen's title last year.
In the men's doubles, Briton Joe Salisbury and American Rajeev Ram, who have reunited after a successful partnership from 2018 to 2024, won their opening match.
Salisbury and Ram, who have won four major trophies together, prevailed 6-1 6-3 against French duo Terence Atmane and Luca Sanchez.
