EXCLUSIVE: Sean Kaufman is in negotiations to star opposite Matt Damon in the untitled event pic from filmmaking duo Daniels at Universal. Daniels, aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, will write and direct. Sandra Oh and Charles Melton are also on board.
Universal had no comment on the casting.
While Damon is essentially the lead of the film, sources say the younger ensemble the Daniels have been auditioning for the last several weeks will have equal footing in the film with Kaufman being the lead of that group.
Details on the project remain under wraps. Kwan, Scheinert and Jonathan Wang will produce through their company Playgrounds’ overall deal with Universal. Playgrounds’ Kwan and Wang recently produced The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist from Universal’s specialty studio Focus Features. It bowed in March.
Executive VP Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the Daniels’ new project for Universal.
The pic is set to bow on November 19, 2027.
Kaufman catapulted to global fame with his breakout role as Steven in Prime Video’s smash hit The Summer I Turned Pretty. He will return for the highly anticipated film. Most recently, he was seen in the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ sci-fi sensation For All Mankind for its thrilling fifth season and will return for the sixth and final season.
His television work also includes standout appearances on Manifest, FBI: Most Wanted, and Law & Order: SVU. He is repped by CESD Talent Agency and Untitled Entertainment.
