After a disappointing start to the World Cup, Portugal lived up to its status as a favourite to win the World Cup with a dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan this evening in Houston, USA.
Cristiano Ronaldo silenced his critics by scoring the opening goal in the sixth minute, becoming the first player in the history of football to score at six World Cups.
Nuno Mendes gave Portugal a 2-0 lead with a beautiful free-kick around 10 minutes later, while Ronaldo scored his brace before half-time and dashed any hopes of an Uzbek comeback.
A Kushanov own-goal and a stunner by Rafael Leão in the second half capped off a strong performance for Roberto Martínez’s men, who have put themselves in a strong position to qualify for the next stage.
Portugal’s last match in Group K of the World Cup against Colombia is scheduled for June 28 at 00.30am (Lisbon time).
