Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has deployed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters, Makurdi, Dankombo Morris, to Plateau State following the recent attack on Kawel community in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area.
The deployment is part of efforts to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the security situation and implement measures aimed at restoring peace and preventing further attacks in the state.
Daily Trust recalls that gunmen on Sunday attacked the community, killing 22 persons, including farmers, health workers and security personnel.
The Inspector-General also approved the deployment of additional police manpower and operational assets, including personnel from the Police Mobile Force and other tactical units, to strengthen security in the affected area.
During a visit to Bokkos on Tuesday, AIG Morris, accompanied by members of the Plateau State Police Command Management Team, met with local government officials, traditional rulers and other stakeholders to assess the situation and discuss security measures.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in Plateau State, SP Alfred Alabo, the AIG conveyed the condolences of the Inspector-General to the Plateau State Government and the people of Bokkos, particularly residents of Kawel community.
Morris condemned the attack, describing it as cruel and inhumane, and assured residents that security agencies would intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.
He said the deployment of additional personnel and tactical assets was intended to restore public confidence, protect vulnerable communities and prevent a recurrence of such attacks.
The AIG also urged community leaders, youth groups and residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information to support ongoing operations.
He assured residents that the situation had been brought under control and encouraged them to go about their lawful activities without fear while remaining vigilant and security conscious.
Speaking during the stakeholders’ meeting, the Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Hon. Amalau Samuel Amalau, commended the Inspector-General for the swift intervention and described the attack as a tragic and unprovoked act of criminality.
He disclosed that victims of the attack had been buried and appealed for the sustained deployment of security personnel and operational assets to complement ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property.
Also speaking, the President of the Women in Politics Initiative, Plateau State chapter, Mrs Hajara Yunana, expressed concern over the impact of the attack on women and families in the affected communities.
She urged the police to ensure that their assurances translated into concrete action and called for the deployment of modern policing technology to improve security in vulnerable areas.
Yunana further appealed to residents, especially women, to remain calm and continue supporting security agencies with credible information that could aid security operations.
