
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is set to summon businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan on Thursday, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the drowning of two Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes in Aurora province.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Wednesday said investigators are now gathering statements from remaining individuals connected to the Ateneo men’s basketball program, including former players and school officials.

“The only people who have yet to give their statements are some former players and the management of Ateneo,” Remulla told reporters in a chance interview in Camp Crame.

“Today, we have Ateneo men’s basketball team chaplain Fr. Nemy Que. Tomorrow, Manny Pangilinan will be summoned,” he added.
The PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) earlier disclosed that it was seeking statements from officials of MVP Sports Foundation, which has been identified as a key supporter of the Ateneo men’s basketball program.

Authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who drowned during a team activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, earlier this month.

The Inquirer has sought comment from Smart Communications, of which Pangilinan is the chairperson and chief executive officer.
However, MVP Sports previously clarified that its involvement with the Ateneo men’s basketball program was limited to funding./dp
