The U.S. Senate for the first time approved a war powers resolution on Tuesday (June 23, 2026) seeking to block U.S. military action against Iran, as lawmakers warily watch President Donald Trump’s efforts to resolve a conflict that the administration launched on its own and now needs Congress to fund.
It was the 10th time the Senate has tried to stop the war, and the outcome, on a vote of 50-48, was a stunning turnaround from past efforts.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in the United Arab Emirates on the first leg of a three-nation tour of Gulf countries aimed at easing their concerns about the result of an agreement intended to end the war.

Oil extends slide on expectations of smoother crude flows via Hormuz
Oil prices fell more than 1% on Wednesday, extending this week’s losses and trading near four-month lows, on signs that more oil tankers stranded in the Gulf are set to move out of the Strait of Hormuz.
Prices have also come under pressure this week after Washington granted Tehran a 60-day sanctions waiver following initial peace talks, allowing it to sell oil, and as hostilities in Lebanon eased.

Few in U.S. say Iran war was worth it; Trump approval ties lowest of term, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds
Just one in four Americans believes President Donald Trump’s war with Iran was worth its costs and a majority worry that a truce with Tehran is unlikely to last, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found.
The five-day poll also showed the war weighing heavily on Mr. Trump’s popularity, with his approval rating dropping to 34%, a return to the lowest level of the Republican’s second term that was last touched in an April survey.
Only 23% of Americans — including just half of Republicans — think the U.S. is now in a stronger position with Iran compared with its position before the war, the poll found. Some 35% of respondents think it is in a weaker position.

Trump slams U.S. Congress for 'poorly timed and meaningless' Iran war powers vote
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticised Congress for passing a largely symbolic resolution calling for an end to the war with Iran, calling it “poorly timed and meaningless.”
“So, I have Iran on the ‘ropes,’ ready to go down for the fall...and the U.S. Senate decides to have a poorly timed and meaningless War Powers Act Vote,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform of the 50-48 Senate vote, adding: “These Senators have just made my job more difficult, but I will get it done, one way or the other, because I always get it done!”

Rubio to address Gulf allies' fears over U.S. Iran deal
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged he faces a delicate mission this week pitching Washington’s Iran peace deal to Gulf Arab leaders who fear excessive concessions will strengthen Tehran and reshape the region’s security balance and oil flows.
America’s top diplomat arrived in the United Arab Emirates late on Tuesday and was due to travel in coming days to Kuwait and Bahrain, where he will meet officials from the Gulf Cooperation Council, a grouping of monarchies that also includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman.
Asked if he was planning to address allies’ disquiet with the accord, Rubio told reporters: “That most certainly will come up in these discussions.” He said they would also discuss issues not covered by the memorandum of understanding.

In a first, U.S. Senate approves War Powers resolution in rebuke to Trump over Iran conflict
While the resolution is largely symbolic, and does not fully carry the force of law, it reflects the growing concerns from a number of Republican lawmakers in both the House and Senate over both the war and the deal Mr. Trump struck with Iran to end it. The House approved the resolution earlier this month.
