
MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte took several jabs at President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday during a visit to Nunungan, Lanao del Norte, where she joked about finally finding “Marcos” in the area, referring to Vice Mayor Marcos Mamay.
Addressing local officials during the town’s 60th Araw ng Nunungan celebration on June 23, Duterte thanked Mayor Sittie Nor-Alliah Mamay and Vice Mayor Marcos Mamay before making the remark.
“First, I would like to express my gratitude to our Mayor, Sittie Nor-Alliah Mamay, and of course to our Vice Mayor, Marcos Mamay. Turns out, Marcos was here all along,” Duterte said in Filipino.

“Our fellow citizens have been looking for him for a long time,” she added, later clarifying that it was a joke.

“Mayor, that’s just a joke, okay? I have more jokes later, so don’t take it personally,” Duterte went on.
Duterte also joked that Marcos could suspend Mamay for inviting her to the event.
“When I saw your invitation to attend your celebration, I wondered whether you were really sure about inviting me here. Because tomorrow, Marcos might be suspended by Marcos,” she said in Filipino.

Later in her speech, Duterte appeared to imitate President Marcos’ speaking style, drawing laughter from the crowd.
Her remarks came amid continuing political tensions between the Duterte and Marcos camps.

In her visit to Lanao del Norte, she also took part in the Office of the Vice President’s initiatives, such as PagbaBAGo: A Million Learner’s Tree Planting inside the Masibay Integrated School and the distribution of wheelchairs and Relief for Indigents in Crises and Emergencies food boxes in the Municipality of Nunungan.
Duterte is also the subject of an impeachment trial scheduled to begin on July 6.
