The Yobe State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged killing of a newborn baby girl in Damaturu, the state capital.
The command said the suspects were arrested after the infant’s remains were discovered concealed in a box and abandoned behind a mosque in the Anguwar Boka area of the town.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
He said operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit responded to a distress call on June 23 concerning the alleged killing of the infant and the concealment of her remains.
According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that a woman who recently gave birth to the baby was allegedly involved in an incident in which the child was strangled before her remains were hidden in a box and dumped behind the mosque.
Abdulkarim said swift police action led to the arrest of two suspects who are currently assisting investigators.
“The case remains under investigation as the command continues to gather facts and ensure that justice is served,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, condemned the incident, describing it as a heinous and inhuman act.
He stressed that every human life is precious and must be protected, warning that the command would not tolerate violence against children and other vulnerable persons.
Jibrin further warned that anyone found responsible for the crime would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The command also reiterated that every child has inherent rights under the law and deserves protection, care and dignity, assuring that those found culpable of violating such rights would face the full weight of the law.
