Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) stated that Bali's subak agricultural system has become a global example of resource management that maintains a balance between low-emission agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability, and cultural values.
Head of BRIN's Agriculture and Food Research Organization Puji Lestari, speaking here on Wednesday, emphasized that the subak system, a Balinese cultural heritage for more than a thousand years, can serve as an inspiration for the world in developing low-emission and sustainable agriculture.
According to her, subak is not merely an agricultural irrigation management system but also reflects the Balinese philosophy of life based on Tri Hita Karana, which promotes harmony among humans, nature, and God.
"I cannot imagine a better place to build a discussion about the future of food systems than a place where those values are still alive and practiced today," she remarked.
She explained that the transformation of agricultural systems being pursued by many countries must continue to maintain a balance between food needs, environmental protection, and community welfare.
According to her, the agricultural sector plays a vital role in global food security but is also one of the largest contributors to methane emissions. Therefore, an approach that integrates productivity and sustainability simultaneously is needed.
During the forum, participants from various countries in Asia and Africa were also invited to observe firsthand subak-based agricultural management practices in Bali as part of a shared learning experience on agricultural systems that are adaptive to climate change.
She expressed hope that Bali's experience could serve as a reference for countries seeking to develop low-emission agricultural systems that remain rooted in local wisdom and the needs of local communities.
"We need to leave Bali with a concrete commitment to act now in realizing more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems," she stated.
