
SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Forest conservation, local products, and community participation take center stage in this year’s Subic Bay Arbor Day, which is a weeklong celebration that brings together government workers, locators, and residents through tree-planting activities, cleanup drives, exhibits, and discussions on environmental sustainability.
The annual celebration, spearheaded by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Ecology Center, officially kicked off on June 22 and will run until July 10, featuring a series of activities to promote forest conservation, showcasing local crafts and products, and strengthening the freeport community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

With the theme “Our Forest, Our Craft, Our Bounty,” this year’s observance highlights the interconnectedness of forests, livelihoods, and the abundance that nature provides.

According to Ecology Center Officer-in-Charge Rossell Abuyo, the festivities include community lectures, exhibits, tree-planting activities, and interactive programs designed to engage various sectors in conservation efforts.
A highlight of the celebration was the “Magtanum Kitamo: Subic Bay’s Arbor Day and Forest Bounty Showcase” held on June 23, which was attended by 592 people, including SBMA employees and personnel from 106 investors and companies within the freeport.
They came together to plant 834 saplings of fruit-bearing tree species, including jackfruit, cashew, soursop, and lipote at the Mulawin Bayakan Reforestation Site in Pastolan Village.
The annual observance coincides with the nationwide celebration of Philippine Arbor Day every June 25 under Republic Act No. 10176, or the Arbor Day Act, which underscores the importance of tree planting and nurturing as part of the country’s climate action initiatives.

Across the country, communities, local government units, and agencies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources continue to carry out programs to strengthen environmental resilience.
