MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said 10 or 11 personnel of the Ateneo de Manila University may face complaints over the fatal drowning of basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
“If there’s a death, is there criminal liability, whether negligence or leading to a violation of the Anti-Hazing Law? Well, if the investigation leads us there,” Nartatez told reporters in a chance interview at Camp Crame on Wednesday.
“Simply put, we have a case. And it’s up to the prosecution to file a case. On our end, we will forward or refer these records of investigation to the prosecution, and they will prosecute,” he added.

When asked how many individuals the PNP would recommend complaints against, Nartatez said: “We are counting more or less about 11 or 10.”
He answered in the affirmative when asked if they were mostly staff members of the university men’s basketball team.
Baterbonia and Adili died during a training activity along the shoreline of Dipaculao, Aurora, last June 8.
The PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group launched an investigation into the incident, later noting that the probe looked into possible homicide or hazing cases. /mcm
