The family of slain National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdussamad Jamiu, has demanded the outcome of an investigation launched by the Nigerian Army into the alleged involvement of some of its personnel in circumstances that led to his death.
Engr. Sani Jimoh, father of the deceased corps member, made the demand while speaking on the Brekete Family radio programme in Abuja, two months after the incident occurred on April 25.
Abuja Metro reports that Jamiu, 24, was allegedly killed inside his room at his family’s residence in Dakwa community, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), just weeks before completing his national service.
The incident was reportedly linked to a robbery operation in the area, a claim that has been disputed by residents of the community.
Sani said the family had met with military authorities several times during the course of the investigation.
“We met them on about four occasions where they promised to make the outcome of the investigation available to us. They told us that the three officials accused of getting into the house are in their custody and that they would make sure that justice is done about it,” he said.
He added that the military authorities requested some of his late son’s belongings as part of the investigation.
“They requested for my son’s gadgets, including his mobile phone, and laptop, which we submitted to them, and kept there for about a week, before being handed back to us,” he said.
Sani lamented that the incident had left his family traumatised, particularly the mother of the deceased.
“It’s not been easy to control his mother. We are only trying to manage her; however, the thing continues to look fresh in her memory till today. She has not been able to recover from it, as every day appears as though the incident just ocurred. To eat is a problem, so to manage her mental health, she has been placed on some medications,” he said.
The deceased’s parents, accompanied by his friends and other associates, on Tuesday visited the Abuja-based radio programme, Brekete Family, where they renewed their call for justice and demanded that the Nigerian Army make public the outcome of its investigation into the incident.
Calls put across to the Nigerian Army’s spokesperson by the anchor of the programme regarding the matter during the show went unanswered.
