The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters, Makurdi, AIG Dankombo Morris, to Plateau State following the recent attack on Kawel community in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area.
The deployment is part of efforts to assess the security situation on the ground and implement measures to restore peace and prevent further attacks in the state.
The Inspector-General has also approved the deployment of additional police personnel and operational assets, including Police Mobile Force personnel and tactical teams, to strengthen security in the affected areas.
Daily Trust recalls that gunmen attacked Kawel community on Sunday, killing 22 people, including farmers, health workers and security personnel.
Meanwhile, at least two herders were killed in an ambush in Talma village, Ngel District of Jos South Local Government Area, on Monday at about 8 p.m. as they headed to their cattle pen, members of the herding community told Daily Trust.
The Plateau State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, identified the victims as Sadiq Muhammad, 28, and Mas’ud Abdullahi, 29.
One of the survivors, Ismaila Haruna, described his escape as a narrow one.
“Three of us were riding motorcycles to the cattle pen when gunmen suddenly opened fire indiscriminately and we all fell. My colleagues died instantly. Fortunately, I managed to escape and reported the incident to personnel of Operation Enduring Peace,” he said.
During a visit to Bokkos on Tuesday, the AIG, accompanied by members of the Plateau State Police Command management team, held meetings with the local government leadership, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
Addressing the stakeholders, AIG Morris conveyed the condolences of the Inspector-General to the Plateau State Government and the people of Bokkos, particularly residents of Kawel community.
In a statement, the spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, said the AIG assured residents that security agencies would intensify efforts to arrest those responsible and ensure they face justice.
