The Democratic Republic of Congo lost 1-0 to Colombia at the Guadalajara stadium, on Tuesday.
The Leopards could not replicate their draw against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in the first match, falling to Daniel Munoz’s second half goal to leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread in Group K.
Munoz scored the all-important winner in the 76th minute with a deflected low shot that crept into the near post for the maximum points.
Colombia were vastly superior in front of a massive support base in Mexico, and had the ball in the net on six minutes but ruled out for offside.
Luis Diaz also thought he had given Colombia the lead in the second half with a well struck curling effort but he was also offside, before Munoz’s heroics came to the fore.
The Crystal Palace was in the right place to receive Juan Quintero’s clever pass and his shot took a deflection to bet Goalkeeper Mpasi, and score his second goal of the tournament.
Colombia with six points is through to the round of 32 stage, and currently top of Group K two points ahead of Portugal whom they face in the final group match.
Croatia also took a huge step towards advancing into the knockout round with a 1-0 win over Panama, thanks to substitute Ante Budimir’s second half goal. Budimir turned in Josip Stanisic’s low cross at the far post on 54 minutes to hand Croatia the win on Luka Modric’s 200th international match. Panama had chances to equalize but the CONCACAF nation crash out of the World Cup after two defeats.
Ghana, however, held England to a 0-0 draw to move closer to the knockout phase qualification in a tightly contested match in Boston.
The Black Stars had Thomas Partey back in a midfield that stifled the Three Lions’ creative players, and the defence also stood resolute to deny the attackers, and ensured Harry Kane fired blanks.
Carlos Quiroz’s side had a penalty claim overlooked by VAR, but the Black Stars are level with England on four points, and second only on inferior goals difference.
RESULTS
Portugal 5-0 Uzbekistan
England 0-0 Ghana
Panama 0-1 Croatia
Colombia 1-0 DR Congo
