Former Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno was
released from the city's Rebibbia prison on Wednesday after
spending almost 18 months behind bars over a conviction for
influence peddling.
"I leave prison an innocent man," Alemanno told reporters.
He added that the Premier Giorgia Meloni's government "has done
nothing" about the problem of prison overcrowding.
Alemanno, a right-wing politician who also served as agriculture
minister from 2001 to 2006, highlighted the difficult situation
in Italy's jails during his detention with his online 'cell
diary'
Overcrowding and insufficient staffing have been linked to high
suicide rates by inmates in Italy.
Alemanno had been in Rebibbia since December 31, 2024 for not
having respected the obligations imposed on him by the
surveillance judges after a definitive conviction for waging
illicit influence in one branch of the political-business
racketeering case in the Italian capital dubbed 'Middle World'
and a suspended sentence of one year and 10 months.
