Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg has started assembling his new shadow cabinet, with PN MPs being summoned to meetings at party headquarters as discussions get underway.
According to Times of Malta, MPs began receiving calls on Wednesday morning to meet Borg, who is expected to assign shadow ministerial portfolios in the coming days. Some discussions may also take place over the phone.
According to reports, MPs Mark Anthony Sammut and Beppe Galea were seen arriving at PN headquarters, while Stephen Spiteri was seen leaving the building.
Shadow ministers are tasked with scrutinising the work of their government counterparts and acting as the Opposition’s spokespersons on specific policy areas.
The move comes a week after the PN’s parliamentary group was finalised following casual elections and the addition of six MPs through Parliament’s gender corrective mechanism.
This will be Borg’s second shadow cabinet since taking over the party leadership last September.
The process could continue into Thursday, with Wednesday’s discussions expected to be limited by parliamentary business. Borg is due to address Parliament later today during the debate on the President’s inaugural speech.
Meanwhile, the PN is also expected to launch the process of confirming or appointing its party leader during a General Council meeting later today, in line with the party’s statute following the general election.
