History content creator The History Guy has turned the spotlight on one of Malta’s most defining moments: the dramatic fall of Fort St Elmo during the Great Siege of 1565.
In a recent post, the popular Instagram historian described the final days of the fortress as the “epic climax of one of the greatest sieges of all time”, recounting how Ottoman forces finally breached St Elmo after weeks of fierce resistance from the Knights of St John and their allies.
According to the post, the fort’s defenders were overwhelmed after holding out for nearly a month against relentless attacks. The final resistance reportedly took place inside the fort’s chapel, where the remaining defenders made their last stand.
The History Guy also highlighted one of the siege’s most infamous stories: that some of the slain defenders were allegedly mutilated and tied to crucifixes before being sent floating across the harbour as a warning to their comrades.
Yet despite the fort’s fall, the creator emphasised that the sacrifice of St Elmo’s defenders was far from meaningless.
By forcing the Ottomans to spend weeks, manpower and resources capturing a single fortification they expected to take quickly, the defenders bought crucial time for Malta’s remaining strongholds to prepare for the battles ahead.
“The Ottomans had assumed it would be a walkover,” he wrote, noting that by the time St Elmo fell, the invading force had already suffered significant losses and faced an increasingly difficult campaign.
Today, the chapel where the final stand is said to have taken place still survives within Fort St Elmo, serving as a powerful reminder of one of the most significant chapters in Maltese history.
More than 460 years later, the story of the Great Siege continues to captivate audiences around the world, and thanks to creators like The History Guy, it’s finding a whole new audience online.
