GNR police have seized almost three tonnes of sardines from Aveiro fish docks, identifying two fishermen for offences related to the capture and sale of fish.
As a statement by the GNR has explained that the fish were “below the legally permitted minimum size” (meaning they were probably ‘much too young’ to be caught – a practice that has, in the past, disrupted reproduction cycles, and caused significant sardine shortages).
According to the statement, the seizure was carried out by the Coastal and Border Control Unit.
Officers inspected two vessels at the docks and detected “the landing of sardines with dimensions below the minimum size legally permitted for their commercialisation.”
The seizure was made after identification of the vessel masters and licence holders.
Corresponding administrative offence reports were issued, carrying fines that can reach €125,000.
After weighing, measuring and undergoing a sanitary inspection, the fish was deemed fit for human consumption and was donated to the Food Banks Against Hunger in Aveiro and Porto for social distribution.
