Gorontalo (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has ranked Indonesia as the world's fourth-largest rice producer, with output reaching 38 million metric tons.
Sulaiman made the remarks while addressing the closing ceremony of the 17th National Farmers and Fishers Week (PENAS XVII) in Gorontalo District on Wednesday.
“FAO announced that our production ranks fourth in the world, reaching 38 million tons. The announcement came from FAO, not from us,” Sulaiman said.
According to the minister, the achievement reflects an increase in national food production despite the challenges posed by climate change and global food supply uncertainties.
Sulaiman said the government is also continuing to promote downstream development in the agricultural sector, including cocoa, coconut, and sugarcane commodities, covering a total area of 870,000 hectares.
The program includes support for seed distribution, land preparation, and planting activities aimed at boosting productivity and creating new employment opportunities, he said.
During the event, Sulaiman also expressed appreciation to farmers and fishers, whom he credited with playing a vital role in safeguarding the country's food security.
The main event of PENAS XVII in Gorontalo was attended by participants from all 38 provinces and served as Indonesia’s largest gathering of farmers and fishers.
