
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) saw a 6% rise in leptospirosis cases from January to June 6 this year compared to the same period last year. Leptospirosis is a disease caused by leptospira bacteria, which is commonly found in contaminated urine of infected animals, such as rats. “From January 4 until June 6, 2026, the country logged 2,177 cases of leptospirosis—6% higher than the figures recorded during the same period last year,” DOH said in a Facebook post.
