SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela — Former Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Armando Velasco died on Wednesday morning. He was 69.
“I am saddened to share that my uncle passed away today. Rest in peace Uncle Mando,” a social media post by Velasco’s niece, Suzette Velasco Clarke, read.

Several family members said Velasco succumbed to cardiac arrest following a colonoscopy procedure at a local hospital.

Born on April 4, 1957, Velasco was a lawyer who became a career election official.
He served as regional director for the poll body in the Cordillera Administrative Region before his appointment as Commissioner by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2008.
During his stint, Velasco supervised the first automated national elections in 2010, and he held the chairmanship of the Committee on Overseas Absentee Voting (COAV).

In 2012, Velasco oversaw the 10-day general re-registration of voters in Lanao del Sur which saw the province’s count of voters shrunk by at least 16 percent.
He retired on February 2, 2013, just several months before the midterm elections.

After his public service, he went back to private law practice and maintained radio programs focused on giving free legal advice. /mr
