
A three-storey building under construction has collapsed in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The incident occurred on Wednesday behind Eternal Filling Station, opposite Chief Sam Ngbor Avenue, off the busy Peter Odili Road. Construction workers were reportedly on site when the building caved in, trapping some of them beneath the rubble.
Residents who spoke with Daily Trust said several workers were trapped following the collapse and called for an urgent emergency response.
Officials of relevant agencies arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and commenced rescue operations.
Although no fatalities had been confirmed as of the time of filing this report, the cause of the collapse remains unknown.
The Rivers State Government is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Blessing Kaborlo Agabe, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, saying two persons had been rescued and taken to hospital.
She added that rescue operations were ongoing to determine whether any other persons remained trapped in the rubble.
