Medvedev seeks to recognize colonialism as crime against humanity

SAINT-PETERSBURG, June 24. /TASS/. Colonialism should be formalized as a crime against humanity to make the West responsible for the exploitation of enslaved peoples, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said.

"It is necessary to legislate for colonialism as a separate crime against humanity," Medvedev said at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.

He noted that this could be done as part of the work of the preparatory committee for the conference on the development of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity.

"This measure seems quite timely and will allow us to establish the responsibility of Western countries for the exploitation of enslaved peoples," the politician said.
