Albufeira will receive between 35 and 40 additional GNR officers during the summer season following a meeting between local authorities and government officials.
The reinforcement was confirmed on Monday during a working meeting at Albufeira Town Hall attended by Portugal’s Minister for Internal Administration Luís Neves, Secretary of State for Internal Administration Telmo Correia and Albufeira Mayor Rui Cristina.
The discussions focused on security challenges facing the municipality, particularly during the summer months when Albufeira’s population swells significantly due to tourism.
According to the municipality, the additional officers will remain in the municipality until the end of December, strengthening the GNR’s operational capacity during both the peak holiday season and the months that follow.
The measure is expected to boost crime prevention efforts and improve response times, helping to enhance security for residents, workers and the millions of visitors who pass through the municipality each year.
Albufeira is one of Portugal’s most visited tourist destinations, particularly for its bustling nightlife which makes it a prime destination for stag and hen parties.
Mayor Rui Cristina welcomed the government’s decision, describing the reinforcement as a long-awaited measure for the municipality.
“This is a concrete response to the needs of the territory and will contribute to increasing levels of security and confidence for everyone who lives, works or visits the municipality,” he said.
The announcement comes the same week Albufeira council announced plans to review its Code of Conduct, introduced a year ago to tackle “inappropriate” behaviour by tourists.
