The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) yesterday marked its third anniversary, celebrating what officials described as three years of impactful interventions that have reached over 28,000 beneficiaries across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at the anniversary celebration held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja on Tuesday, Nigeria’s First Lady and National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, said the initiative was established to complement President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through programmes aimed at improving livelihoods, empowering vulnerable groups, and creating opportunities for families across the country.
The First Lady recalled the initiative’s first intervention, which took place on July 13, 2023, when financial assistance was provided to victims of the devastating flood disaster in Trademoore Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, before the organisation was formally registered on August 9, 2023.
She said the initiative has since expanded its reach, supporting women, youths, children, senior citizens, veterans, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups nationwide.
According to her, beneficiaries have received support through agricultural grants and tools, educational scholarships and materials; healthcare interventions; as well as assistance during conflicts and natural disasters.
“The theme of this event, ‘Our Stories, Her Impact’, properly captures the significance of today’s programme. At the heart of every intervention, every programme and every outreach is a person whose life has been touched, a family that has found support, or a community that has been empowered,” she said.
The First Lady commended state first ladies, RHI coordinators, donors, development partners, and community leaders for contributing to the initiative’s achievements over the past three years.
Also speaking, the FCT Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative and Director-General of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, described the initiative as an opportunity that has transformed lives across communities.
She said interventions in the FCT have included ICT and digital skills training for women in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), economic empowerment programmes for women entrepreneurs, support for disaster-affected families, educational assistance for girls, agricultural support for farmers, and inclusion programmes for persons with disabilities.
Benjamins-Laniyi said the initiative’s impact goes beyond statistics, noting that behind every intervention is a story of hope, restored confidence, and a new opportunity.
She also acknowledged the contributions of traditional institutions, including the Queen Mothers of the 17 tribal chiefdoms in the FCT, wives of Area Council chairmen, development partners and volunteers who helped extend the initiative’s reach to grassroots communities.
