
EXCLUSIVE: Ayden Mayeri (Mr. Throwback) and Ashleigh Cummings (Citadel) have been added to the cast of the Prime Video series Sex Criminals, an adaptation of Image Comics’ title, which hails from Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani, Tze Chun, LuckyChap and Amazon MGM Studios. Mayeri is a series regular while Cummings will be recurring with an option to become a regular if there is a second season.
They join series leads Imogen Poots and John Reynolds and previously cast Pamela Adlon and BD Wong as a series regular and recurring, respectively. Nanjani also is set to recur.
In Sex Criminals, co-created by Gordon, Nanjiani and Chun, Suze (Poots), is a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night, she meets Jon (Reynolds)… who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex having, time stopping couple would do: they rob banks.
Mayeri will play a character from the comics, Rachel, Suze’s best friend since middle school. Cummings will play Charlene, Jon’s younger sister. Adlon plays Bev, Suze’s mom. Wong plays Oliver, a bank manager with a connection to Bev and Suze. Nanjiani plays a character named Dane.
Chun serves as showrunner for the series based on the comic, written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Chip Zdarsky, which was originally published in 2013.
Gordon, Nanjiani and Dani Melia exec produce the eight-episode series via Winter Coat Films alongside Chun, Dani Gorin for LuckyChap, Fraction and Zdarsky. Nia DaCosta directs episodes 1, 2, 7, and 8 and executive produces. Louie Hayes from LuckyChap is a producer.
Mayeri was a series regular on Peacock’s Mr. Throwback and Showtime’s I Love That For You and recurred on Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, Apple TV’s The Afterparty and HBO’s Veep. She is currently seen in the Hulu movie Never Change! and is coming up in the Netflix movie Bad Day with Cameron Diaz and in the horror movie Nice People with Sosie Bacon. Mayeri is repped by Gersh, Untitled, Hansen Jacobsen.
Australian actress Cummings has had major roles on Prime Video’s Citadel, Peacock’s Long Bright River and AMC’s NOS4A2. She is repped by Impression Entertainment, Gersh and Lisa Mann Creative Management.
