If you order a physical copy of GTA 6, enjoy your empty box
By
Zachary McAuliffe
Physical copies of games have long consisted of a disc or a cartridge -- you know, a physical version of the game itself. But Rockstar Games seems to be done with hard copies.
"The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading," Rockstar wrote in a news release.
After this announcement, Lootbox Gaming and Video Games Plus, two gaming retailers, revealed that they won't sell copies of GTA 6 because of this box-with-code format.
"We've yet to receive full details on our end, but assuming information about it being a code in box is true, we will not be supporting the release of GTA 6," Loot Box Gaming wrote online.
Which raises a big question for me: Why is Rockstar even selling a physical copy in the first place if it's just a digital code? And if it's just a code in the box, I don't think I'm willing to pay for the cost of shipping just to display an empty case. If I can't have a true physical copy of the game, just make it a digital-only release.
Rockstar hasn't immediately responded to a request to comment.

GTA 6 was a long time coming
By

Grand Theft Auto 6 is stirring up a frenzy partly because of the huge time gap between now and the last mainline entry in the series, Grand Theft Auto 5. GTA 5 launched in September, 2013, meaning by the time Rockstar releases GTA 6, we'll have waited more than 13 years between games.
GTA 5 launched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before being ported to the PlayStation 4 and 5, as well as the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S -- basically two entire generations of consoles without another numbered entry in the franchise.
Hopefully we won't have to wait that long for whatever the next mainline Grand Theft Auto game is. I'd love to see a return to the 2000s when we got GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA 4 all in a seven-year span. Rockstar was cooking with gas that decade.
