Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to using international platforms, including BRICS, to promote peace in the Middle East and support efforts to end conflicts involving Iran and Lebanon.
"We continue working through various forums to help improve global conditions, including in the Middle East," Foreign Ministry Asia-Pacific and Africa Director General Santo Darmosumarto said on Wednesday.
Speaking after the 2026 China-Indonesia Media and Think Tank Forum, Santo said Indonesia was closely monitoring sensitive US-Iran negotiations and newly launched Israel-Lebanon talks in Washington from June 23-25.
He said Indonesia remained optimistic the negotiations would produce concrete outcomes and contribute to lasting peace and stability across the Middle East.
Santo stressed that Indonesia respects the sovereign right of countries involved in conflicts to choose their preferred diplomatic channels, including Iran and the United States' use of Pakistan as a mediator.
Initiatives pursued through international forums are expected to complement efforts by the parties directly involved, he said, adding that Indonesia would continue advocating peace in every forum it joins.
Indonesia's diplomatic push comes as several rare breakthroughs emerge. On June 21, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland had made significant progress.
The negotiations focused on reducing tensions linked to the conflict in Lebanon and easing economic sanctions imposed on Iran.
Qatar and Pakistan, which facilitated the talks, issued a joint statement describing the outcome as a major diplomatic advance.
The two countries agreed to establish a coordination mechanism, with Lebanese participation, to monitor compliance with a halt in military operations and support implementation efforts.
Attention is now shifting to Washington, where Lebanese and Israeli leaders are holding direct talks aimed at finalizing an official ceasefire framework.
