See Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman Tease ‘Practical Magic’ in Throwback 1998 E! Interviews
Get ready to be bewitched by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
With Practical Magic 2 only three months away—the film hits theaters on Sept. 11—E! is looking back at the costars when they were busy promoting the first Practical Magic film in 1998.
And as Kidman shared with E! at the time, she and Bullock had an instant spark.
“She's very down to earth and has a great sense of humor,” Kidman, now 59, raved about Bullock. “We just managed to click. It wasn't anything that had to be forced or anything like that. I’m a very tactile person, so I always touch people and hug and everything. She was really open to that.”
And it was that closeness that helped the two play witchy sisters Sally Owens (Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Kidman) as they navigated love and loss in a family of witches, led by their aunts: Aunt Jet (Dianne Wiest) and Aunt Franny (Stockard Channing).
As Bullock noted, you simply could never buy or even manifest the kind of chemistry that she and Kidman had on the film.
“We just got along great and we adored each other and we wanted the same thing out of the film,” she shared with E!. “It’s rare that they put two women in a film together that love each other rather than try to steal each other’s husband.”

“Nicole and I just got along really well,” Bullock added, “and we appreciated the fact that we were so different. It just was wonderful.”
Equally wonderful was the message the film conveyed, a topic that spoke to both Oscar winners at the time—especially Bullock.
“Love what makes you unique and different,” she told E!. “We’re always so quick to ostracize people because they're different and we don't understand them.”
But as Bullock, now 61, noted, it’s just those differences that “make us all beautiful.”
As you wait for Practical Magic 2 to finally hit theaters in September, keep reading for all the practically perfect secrets about the first film.
