Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State on Tuesday commissioned the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) Vegetables Market in Kwadom, Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area, while also unveiling plans for a mega farm project in the state.
The market, which comprises 160 shops constructed by NALDA, is designed to serve as a major hub for agricultural trade, improve market access for farmers, and strengthen the agricultural value chain across Gombe State and its environs.
Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the project as a clear outcome of effective collaboration between the federal, state, and local governments, noting that it would significantly expand economic opportunities for farmers, traders, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
He said the facility would contribute to food security, stimulate rural economic growth, and improve the livelihoods of residents, particularly those engaged in farming and agro-based businesses.
The governor further disclosed that the proposed super highway project linking Nasarawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe, and Borno States would pass close to the area, a development he said would further boost commercial activities and attract private investment to the corridor.
According to him, the state government complemented the federal intervention with supporting infrastructure, including a perimeter fence, a 1.3-kilometre access road, and a solar-powered borehole with multiple water outlets to ensure smooth operation of the market.
The Executive Secretary of NALDA, Cornelius Adebayo, described the project as a model of intergovernmental collaboration, saying it reflects the commitment of the Federal Government and sub-national authorities to delivering impactful agricultural development initiatives.
He explained that the market was strategically designed to provide reliable linkages for vegetable farmers, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance productivity within the agricultural value chain.
Adebayo added that NALDA had already completed irrigation and cold storage facilities in three locations across Gombe State, alongside clearing farmlands to support large-scale vegetable production.
