DINALUPIHAN, Bataan – Bataan Third District Rep. Maria Angela Garcia has rejected calls to refurbish the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) and have it produce power for the grid.
Garcia said she does not consider nuclear energy to be cheap “because putting up a nuclear plant is too costly.”
On the sidelines of this town’s fiesta celebrations, which she graced, Garcia told reporters on Wednesday that she’s not in favor of operating the BNPP in nearby Morong town because of safety concerns.

“Besides, the Bataan landscape is no longer fit for (operating) a mothballed nuclear plant because of increasing population and (the existence of) freeport zones,” she explained.
Garcia lauded the municipal council of Morong for passing an ordinance declaring the town a “non-nuclear zone.”
She said the nuclear plant premises may be better converted into a data center, “which is needed most at this time.”/coa
