MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP CIDG) has taken a statement from the mother of late Ateneo de Manila University student-athlete Rene Clert Baterbonia.
In a statement, the CIDG said its investigators visited the Baterbonia family in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, on Thursday.
“The CIDG obtained the official sworn testimony of Mrs. Rovelyn Baterbonia, the mother of the late Rene Clert ‘Bobet’ Baterbonia, inside the San Agustin Gymnasium, Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, duly assisted by her counsel, Atty. Kenneth D. Minglana,” it explained.

“The statement is now being consolidated, processed, and integrated as part of vital documentary evidence for the referral of criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ),” it added.
Baterbonia and fellow player Divine Adili died after being swept away by large waves during a training activity along the shoreline in Dipaculao, Aurora, earlier this month.
The CIDG launched an investigation into the incident nearly two weeks later, noting that the probe began looking into possible homicide cases or violations of Republic Act No. 11053, or the Anti-Hazing Act.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier said the PNP CIDG is set to submit its findings on the incident to the DOJ by Friday, June 26.

Remulla said investigators interviewed nearly 100 individuals and gathered around 1,200 pages of testimonies from participants of the Aurora activity.
“The CIDG assures the family and the public that it is handling the active case with absolute thoroughness, transparency, and urgency to ensure that accountability is established and justice is properly served,” the police unit stressed. /mcm
