Alex Borg has officially submitted his declaration of interest to continue serving as leader of the Nationalist Party, taking the first formal step in the PN’s leadership election process.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the PN’s Electoral, Records and Data Commission confirmed it had received Borg’s declaration of interest at 12pm, making him the first candidate to formally enter the leadership race.
The expression of interest comes a day after the PN General Council launched the process to elect a new party leader.
Under the party’s statute, declarations of interest will remain open until Wednesday 1st July at 6pm, allowing other eligible candidates to enter the contest.
The Commission also noted that only paid-up members of the Nationalist Party are eligible to contest the leadership.
It added that it will publicly announce every declaration of interest it receives as the leadership process continues.
If no other candidates come forward before the deadline, Borg is expected to continue as PN leader, subject to the party’s internal confirmation process.
