MANILA, Philippines — Businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan on Thursday submitted an affidavit to the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP CIDG) in connection with the fatal drownings of two Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes.
“[CIDG director Maj. Gen. Robert] Morico informed the lawyers of MVP (Pangilinan) that his presence is no longer needed since the case build-up is almost complete. His affidavit was enough,” Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said in a text message sent to reporters.
He did not provide further details as to Pangilinan’s affidavit.

The businessman had been summoned by the CIDG on Thursday to explain the role of MVP Sports Foundation, the sports development arm of the businessman’s group of companies, in the Ateneo men’s basketball team program.
This came weeks following the deaths of Ateneo players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili after they were swept away by large waves during a training activity along the shoreline of Dipaculao, Aurora earlier this month.
Morico previously said it emerged in their investigation of the incident that MVP Sports was allegedly in charge of the planning of the Ateneo men’s basketball program.
However, in a statement, MVP Sports maintained that their role in the Ateneo men’s basketball program was limited to financial support. /das
