Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Indonesian aviation will begin in 2027 as part of a transformation towards low-emission air transportation.
"This is an alternative to conventional aviation fuel and is much cleaner," he informed while opening the Ministerial Coordination Meeting on Strengthening Airport Ecosystem Governance in Jakarta on Thursday.
AHY stated that this transformation is a crucial part of the government's efforts to maintain a balance between national economic growth and commitment to environmental preservation while reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
He viewed that aviation development must consider the impacts of climate change and the various environmental challenges arising from the current increase in global carbon emissions.
Therefore, the government is preparing various decarbonization measures for the aviation sector by reducing energy consumption, converting energy sources, and increasing the efficiency of national resource utilization, AHY continued.
According to him, these decarbonization efforts will also help strengthen the airport ecosystem, ensuring that the development of the air transportation sector remains aligned with the national sustainable development agenda.
Furthermore, the government is also pursuing the implementation of net-zero emissions at airports through various environmentally friendly infrastructure and technology approaches.
AHY said several airports in various countries have practiced the net-zero emission concept and can serve as a reference for developing sustainable airports in Indonesia.
One of the measures is the preparation to use SAF as a cleaner alternative aviation fuel compared to current conventional aviation fuel.
The use of SAF is targeted to begin in 2027 as the initial stage of the transformation towards a more environmentally friendly and sustainable national aviation system.
In the initial phase, SAF will be focused on one percent of international flights departing from Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten; and I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali.
AHY emphasized that SAF development is expected to be pursued domestically across the entire value chain, from upstream to downstream, while adhering to the sustainability and quality standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
