Focus has dropped a first look image of Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Robert Eggers’ latest feature Werwulf. Check it out above.
An official synopsis for the film has yet to be released, but the film has a tagline: “Werwulf is a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation, and the devil within.”
Continuing his run of historically-rooted horror after The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu, Eggers penned the script with his frequent collaborator, Sjón. The project extends his relationship with Focus Features following Nosferatu, which broke out as a critical and commercial hit at a worldwide gross of around $181M, and followed his work on The Northman.
Werwulf also reunites the director with past collaborators Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe.
Focus debuted the film’s trailer at Cinemacon earlier this year. Describing the clip, Deadline’s Matt Grobar, who was in the room, wrote: “In the very dark and ominous trailer, we hear whispers of a curse and see a house on fire. Things wrap up with a look at Taylor-Johnson seemingly transforming into the titular creature.”
Focus Features financed the film and produced it alongside Eggers and Sjón, with Maiden Voyage’s Chris and Eleanor Columbus executive producing. Like Nosferatu, it’s set to release on Christmas Day.
