Vice President Vance hosted Republican senators for dinner Wednesday evening following President Trump’s contentious meeting with GOP senators on Capitol Hill earlier in the day.
The vice president’s office confirmed to The Hill that the gathering took place hours after Trump vocally clashed with Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) over the senator’s vote in favor of a war powers resolution Tuesday that would have called on the administration to withdraw U.S. troops from the war with Iran.
Cassidy told reporters shortly after the meeting that he will not “be bullied into silence,” but he attended a White House Situation Room meeting later Wednesday evening with Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff about the Iran conflict.
“I want to thank Vice President Vance and Special Envoy Witkoff for the thorough briefing this afternoon on Iran. I appreciate the quick invitation to the White House to address many of my concerns,” Cassidy said in a post on social media.
In another war powers resolution later Wednesday evening, Cassidy and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) changed their yes votes. Cassidy opposed the new resolution, which was nearly identical to the one he had supported a day earlier, while Paul voted “present” after voting yes with Cassidy on Tuesday’s vote.
The Louisiana senator said in an interview with CBS News’s “Face the Nation” that he passed Witkoff a note requesting a briefing after his shouting match with Trump.
“Steve, I would consider changing my vote, but I’ve been voting yes because I’ve not been briefed,” Cassidy recalled writing to Witkoff. “He said, ‘Call me back in the hour and let’s have a briefing.’ We had it last night.”
Semafor first reported the dinner.
