Leaders of the two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have disagreed over the reaction of the Ebonyi State governor, Francis Nwifuru, to a statement credited to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Daily Trust gathered the governor is angry over reports that the opposition parties in the state are allegedly working with Wike to truncate his re-election and had at a political gathering of the All Progressives Congress, APC recently, said, “We have all it takes to consume whoever pushes us to the wall.”
The Wike faction descended on the Governor for threatening to consume the opposition in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing a press conference at the National Headquarters of the party in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary of the Wike backed PDP, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed said the party viewed with dismay “the reckless and inflammatory comments credited to the Governor of Ebonyi State”.
The PDP under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki however commended the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, for calling out and “condemning the anti-party activities of the FCT Minister.”
Comrade Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working committee of the PDP said the PDP as an opposition should not be in alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
He said, “We are certain that Governor Nwifuru is conscious of the ignoble role Wike, then as the Governor of Rivers State, played in pushing his predecessor out of the PDP.
His outburst finds historical corroboration in a similar challenge undertaken by his predecessor, David Umahi, who said that the only notable thing Wike has done is the crude accumulation and conversion of public wealth-accusations Wike has not refuted.
“We reiterate that the Peoples Democratic Party, as an opposition party, is not and cannot be in an alliance with the ruling party. We are a principled political party and will continue to insist on best practices in political contests in a bid to help achieve democratic consolidation in our country.
