Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is developing inclusive and sustainable financing models for natural conservation as it seeks to reduce reliance on public funds and attract high-integrity investment, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said on Thursday.
Speaking at the Peusangan Elephant Conservation Initiative Roundtable during London Climate Action Week 2026, Antoni said Indonesia is reshaping conservation governance to better integrate environmental protection and financing.
“Indonesia is not just devising financing strategies. We are shaping a new paradigm for conservation administration,” Antoni said, according to a statement released in Jakarta on Friday.
He said the approach aims to make national parks financially self-sustaining while increasing community participation and private sector involvement, supported by a strong regulatory framework to ensure accountability.
Under President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, Indonesia has formed an innovative financing task force to support 13 national parks and two conservation landscapes for iconic species, targeting financial independence by 2030.

The government is pursuing a multi-pronged strategy combining regulatory reform, institutional strengthening, and mobilization of private investment through innovative financing tools and partnerships.
Antoni said Indonesia is also promoting a new framework that treats ecosystems as strategic assets capable of generating economic value while maintaining ecological sustainability.
He cited initiatives including carbon credits, biodiversity credits, conservation bonds, ecotourism, bioprospecting, non-timber forest products, and public-private partnership schemes.
The strategy is designed to expand investment opportunities while improving conservation outcomes and raising living standards in surrounding communities, he said.
Antoni highlighted the Peusangan Elephant Conservation Initiative as a model project linking wildlife protection, habitat connectivity, and local economic development within a single conservation landscape.
“We welcome partnerships in expertise, technology transfer, program implementation, and innovative financing. Global collaboration will accelerate biodiversity protection while generating sustainable economic benefits,” Antoni said.
